In the Spring term, Year 6 studied the country of Japan. In literacy, we read traditional Japanese folk tales such as 'Issun Boshi' and created our own versions. We studied the differences between Japanese and British schools and debated which was the better system. We also wrote travel brochures for a Japanese holiday resort and looked at natural disasters such as Tsunamis. In RE we explored the religion of Shintoism, particularly its shrines and the creation stories of Shintoism as well as the creation stories of many other religions. In Art, we looked at Manga and Anime through films such as 'Spirited Away' and had a go at making our own Manga portraits as well as trying the ancient Japanese art of Origami! At the end of the topic, we invited our parents and carers in to teach them how to make sushi (which we were already experts at!). How do you think they got on?

Year 6 worked very hard in the Autumn term on our World War Two topic. In literacy we studied 'The Story of Adolphus Tips' by Michael Morpurgo and 'The Arrival' by Shaun Tan and this influenced our poems, diary writing, stories and biographies. We baked World War Two recipes, made model Anderson shelters in Design and Technology and created Blitz skylines using pastels in Art. We also studied the music of World War Two and looked at famous figures such as Winston Churchill and Anne Frank. We celebrated all of this with a VE day celebration party, with costumes, wartime food and music. Thank you to all the parents who attended!
