Year 1
The Comber Grove Primary School curriculum is deeply rooted in Global Citizenship. We teach children to think critically about world issues and develop their voice. Each half term has a whole school focus:
Power and Governance
Social Justice and Equality
Identity and Diversity
Human Rights
Sustainable Development
Peace and Conflict
We deliver this global curriculum through of: the National Curriculum core and foundation subjects, Religious Education, PSHE, and a rich enrichment programme for each year group including theatre and drama classes with The Blue Elephant Theatre, dance and fitness sessions with our PE coach and opportunities to create and perform music at a top level with our resident musician. We provide opportunities to collaborate with our local community on projects and plan regular visits to inspire and hook children into their learning.
In June, Year 1 are assessed in phonics. This is called the Year 1 phonics screening check. Your child will read 40 words out loud to a teacher. You’ll find out how your child did, and their teacher will assess whether he or she needs extra help with reading. If your child does not do well enough in the check they’ll have to do it again in Year 2.
